Y’all, it’s almost, officially fall & I am so not ready for the season to change!! I have an unhealthy obsession with summer, so much so that for years I’ve experienced (self-diagnosed!) seasonal affective disorder. I’ve found that keeping myself immersed in a hobby helps tremendously so this fall, I’m seriously focusing on wrapping up furniture shopping & home decor placement for our house. I want to have certain areas completely finished by the holidays.
One area that I love seeing bits of decor in, yet find it tough to incorporate pieces into, is the kitchen. Dressing up the island or countertop with a decorative tray, floral arrangement, etc. can bring a nice pop of style to the space. It can be hard to know what’s enough vs what’s too much, though.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when styling a decorative tray:
-
Select a color palette & stick with it. Using 2-3 colors & shades helps with uniformity. Too many tones will make the small feature look too busy
-
Utilize different textures. Florals, geometric ceramics, a textured tray, etc. are great pieces to display texture with.
-
Use items with different heights. Mixing & matching tall & short pieces & even stacking items on books or risers helps create a balanced look
-
Incorporate florals & greenery. Adding floral picks or even a full floral arrangement gives the tray a fresh, natural feel
-
Add an item that has wording on it. Wooden blocks, mugs or books with words & phrases on them break up the solidness of the other items. Plus, they can provide an alternative focal point.
I got everything pictured (except the wooden sign, vase & florals) from either Marshall’s or Target’s $1 spot! Be sure to check your local Home Goods, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx or Target (mainly the $1 section!)! Those are all places to find great, affordable decor options.
