‘You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.’ – Angela Davis
I will do just that, through you. My sweet little brown baby girl, who will more than likely always be recognized first, by your skin tone. You are a combination of 2 cultures that you’ll grow up to be super proud of! But in some, your beautiful toasty brown skin & pride in who you are may incite hatred & judgment.
When your dad & I decided that we wanted to grow our family, I vowed to always make sure you & your siblings stood firm in who you are. I will teach you to honor the brown & blackness that make up your entire beings. & to never be ashamed of who you are, regardless of the way others may try to make you feel because of it.
I’m raising you to be a headstrong baby girl who will not only know exactly who you are & what you want out of this world, but you’ll be sure to firmly let others know of it. Your level of confidence will be so high! Not because you’re mixed, or because your curly hair makes you “look exotic” or because your racial ambiguity makes you “the perfect instagram influencer/model”. You’ll be confident because your mama & daddy did a damn good job teaching you that your beauty lies in your strength & power as a woman of color.
I will teach you to be proud of who you are & to always fight for what is owed to you… this place was built on the backs of your people anyway. I will always remind you of their power & how you can transform this world, just by being who you are. There’s so much strength in our people & you will know & feel every bit of it.
